"Understanding NDIS and Holidays: What’s Covered and What’s Not"

Will the NDIS Fund My Holiday?

Planning a holiday can be exciting, but if you’re an NDIS participant, you might wonder if the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will cover any of your travel expenses. While the NDIS won’t fund your holiday directly, it may help you access your regular supports while you’re away.

What the NDIS Will and Won’t Fund

The NDIS covers only supports and services deemed “reasonable and necessary” to meet your disability needs and align with your NDIS plan goals. General travel expenses—such as flights, accommodation, meals, and entertainment—are considered personal costs that are not eligible for NDIS funding.

However, the NDIS may provide funding for supports that enable your participation in travel, such as hiring a support worker to assist you during your trip. These supports must be similar to those you use in your daily life.

Using NDIS Funding Overseas

While the NDIS does not provide a specific holiday budget, it may allow you to use your regular supports in a different location, including overseas. Whether funding is approved depends on your circumstances and the duration of your trip.

Generally, NDIS-funded supports can only be used for the first six weeks of travel. Beyond this period, you’ll need to cover costs yourself. If you plan to travel longer, you can request an extension by contacting the NDIS. Provide details about your trip, such as the duration, purpose, and required supports. While an extension isn’t guaranteed, it’s worth exploring.

Are Holiday Rentals Considered NDIS Short-Term Accommodation?

NDIS short-term accommodation (STA) is designed to provide respite care and strengthen ongoing support arrangements, not to fund holiday rentals. STA funding covers temporary care to give participants and their carers a break from usual care routines.

However, if additional costs during your stay are directly related to your disability, they may be claimable under your NDIS plan.

Can NDIS Travel Allowance Be Used for Holidays?

No. The NDIS travel allowance is for regular, everyday needs and does not cover holiday-related expenses like flights or travel-specific accommodation.

Support workers may claim travel costs for:

  • Accompanying participants for core and capacity-building supports (e.g., community access).

  • Traveling to participants for face-to-face support (within set limits).

  • Non-labour costs like parking, tolls, or fuel.

These claims must relate to services delivered in your usual location and do not extend to travel-specific expenses for holidays.

Tips for a Stress-Free NDIS-Supported Holiday

If travel aligns with your NDIS goals, planning ahead can make your holiday more enjoyable. Here are some tips:

1. Understand Currency Conversion for Overseas Trips

Submit invoices in AUD, even for purchases made overseas. Using a credit card ensures the correct exchange rate is recorded.

2. Plan with Your Support Worker

Discuss expectations for care, daily schedules, and costs well in advance. Get agreements in writing to avoid misunderstandings.

3. Consider Group Travel

Traveling with a group can reduce costs and add to the fun. Shared expenses, such as support worker fees and accommodations, can make your holiday more affordable. Some companies even offer group holiday packages tailored for people with disabilities.

4. Get Comprehensive Travel Insurance

While the NDIS doesn’t cover travel insurance, having a good policy is essential. Look for coverage that includes lost items, medical emergencies, and delays. Always review the terms and conditions carefully.

Conclusion

While the NDIS won’t fund your holiday directly, it can help cover disability-related supports that allow you to enjoy your trip. By planning carefully and understanding your entitlements, you can make the most of your travel experience while staying within your NDIS plan.
