The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) offers crucial funding to assist individuals with disabilities in accessing necessary support. But what should you do if your funds deplete before your plan review? Running low on funds can be worrisome, but rest assured—there are strategies to manage your budget effectively and explore options to maintain continuous support.

At Proactive Plan Managers, we assist NDIS participants in optimizing their funding and preventing disruptions in their support. Here’s what you should do if your NDIS funds are running low.

1. Check Your NDIS Budget

The first step is to review your NDIS budget to see where the overspending occurred. Log in to your myplace portal or check with your NDIS Plan Manager to get a breakdown of your spending.

Look at:

  • Which categories are running low

  • Where you’ve spent the most

  • Any unused funds in other categories

2. Prioritize Essential Supports

If your funds are limited, prioritize your most essential services. Focus on supports that are crucial for your daily life, such as:

  • Personal care

  • Therapy sessions

  • Assistive technology maintenance

  • Transport for medical appointments

You may need to adjust or reduce non-essential services to stretch your remaining funds.

3. Request a Plan Review (If Eligible)

If your needs have changed or your funding is insufficient, you may be able to request a Plan Review. You can apply for:

  • Unscheduled Plan Review – If your situation has changed unexpectedly.

  • Urgent Plan Review – If you’re at risk of losing essential support.

To apply, you’ll need:

  • A letter explaining why you need more funding

  • Supporting documents from therapists or doctors

  • Evidence of how your current budget was spent

4. Look for Alternative Funding Options

If your NDIS funding is running low, you can also explore:

  • Community & Government Grants – Some local organizations provide additional support.

  • Medicare or Health Insurance – Some therapy services may be partially covered.

  • State-Based Disability Support – Some states offer additional programs for disability support.

5. Speak to Your NDIS Plan Manager

A Plan Manager can help you:

  • Track your spending and avoid overspending in the future

  • Find cost-effective service providers

  • Apply for a plan review if necessary

  • Suggest better ways to allocate your remaining funds
