Does Self-Management Offer More Funding and Choices?

What is Self-Management?

Self-management means you handle all the administrative tasks associated with your NDIS funding. This includes finding support providers, reviewing service agreements, scheduling appointments, ensuring providers are paid, managing your budget, and adhering to NDIA requirements. Additionally, you must keep thorough records, including all receipts and invoices, for auditing purposes.

Benefits of Self-Management:

The primary benefit of self-management is the freedom to choose both registered and unregistered providers, offering greater flexibility. This is also true for plan management, but if you are NDIA-managed, you are limited to registered providers only.

Another advantage is the option to pay providers above the maximum price limit.

Funding Myth

There is a common misconception that self-management results in more funding. This is not true. The amount of funding you receive does not change based on how you manage your plan. While some believe plan management is more expensive, it is funded in addition to your NDIS plan and does not reduce your allocated funding. Self-managing can take up significant time, potentially up to 20 hours a week, which a plan manager can save for you.

Flexibility and Choices

Self-management offers more flexibility than being NDIA-managed but not more than plan management. Both self-managed and plan-managed participants can use registered and unregistered providers, providing more options to achieve your goals. However, all supports must be deemed reasonable and necessary regardless of management type. A good plan manager can help you optimize your funding and budgets, potentially giving you access to more supports.

Choosing the Best Option

For most people, plan management is ideal. It provides the flexibility of self-management without the hassle, as all financial tasks are handled for you. This allows you to focus on your goals and enjoy your life. However, if you enjoy and feel confident managing your finances and administration, self-management might suit you better. If you’re unsure about handling NDIS administration or prefer not to, plan management is the best choice. It’s free, allows access to any provider, and takes care of the administrative work.
